"Gr 7 Up. As we enter the 21st century, it is incumbent upon us to take stock of where we have been, what we have wrought, and where we are headed. “Save The Endangered Species Series” presents the state of five animals and one habitat threatened by extinction. Narrated by Canadian actor Duncan Regher, the series examines the potential annihilation of the subjects and what efforts are underway to preserve them. Each video explains the subject’s place in the ecosystem, cause of endangerment, and current conservation efforts. The culprit, generally man’s greed and encroachment on habitat, is identified. A conservationist explains the significance of the subject and what can be done to help reverse the decimation. Efforts include educating or retraining native peoples in a habitat, such as training former macaw poachers to become eco-tour guides. This helps to preserve the species and allows the natives to maintain a livelihood. Also shown is a retirement farm in Tennessee where zoo and circus elephants are cared for. Scientists and conservationists working in the field discuss the subjects, their importance, and the efforts to preserve them. Many of these individuals interviewed are women who have dedicated their lives to conservationism. Photography is crisp and clear. The aural quality is good, and Regher’s narration is wonderfully mellifluous. The incidental music complements the visuals. This informative series is suitable for libraries in middle school and above. – Mike Brown, Bowie High School, MD – December 2002"
