Summary
A highly acclaimed actress, writer and director, Liv Ullmann is the subject of this intimate portrait by award-winning documentary filmmaker, Richard Kaplan. Twice nominated for best actress by the Academy Awards, Ullmann displays a rare versatility as an actress, author, mother and filmmaker. A Look at Liv captures moments from some of her most well-known performances in such films as Scenes from a Marriage, Cries and Whispers, Persona and Face to Face, as well as her triumphant stage work in Eugene O’Neill’s Moon for the Misbegotten.
Produced at the height of her popularity in the U.S., the film follows Ms. Ullmann on a book tour to promote her bestselling memoir, Changing, allowing viewers a unique glimpse into the life of an accomplished artist. In addition to interviews with Ullmann, the film features commentary from some of her closest associates and most famous collaborators, including actor David Carradine, cinematographer Sven Nykvist and legendary filmmaker, Ingmar Bergman.
But it is Ullmann who reveals the most about her self, whether recalling her childhood in Japan, Norway and Canada, reflecting upon her role as mother to her daughter Linn (with Bergman) or discussing one of her favorite authors, Sigrid Undset, whose Kristin Lavransdatter Ullmann would eventually adapt for the screen and direct.
Featuring childhood photographs, rare home movies, and footage of Ullmann playing with her daughter, this film highlights the difficulties that face many working mothers.
