SummaryIn commemoration of the Corps of Discovery bicentennial, the State of Illinois commissioned Master Craftsman Steven Lalioff to reconstruct the first of the three forts that housed explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and the group of men who made their way across the continent in search of an all water passage to the Pacific Ocean. The epic story of the Lewis and Clark expedition began at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, where the men built a log fort and gathered supplies. Here they forged the team that would spend the following two years exploring what is now the Western United States.
Camp River Dubois brings the two hundred year old story of the Corps of Discovery into the present. The thirteen month journey Lalioff undertook to comprehend the men who made up the Corps and to interpret their story through the reconstruction of the fort mirrors the journey of the original expedition. The dual stories of the present day construction of Camp River Dubois and the remarkable journey of the Corps of Discovery provides an unique insight into the lives of the men who made possible America as she is today, from sea to shining sea.
