Consumers Reviews

Critics Reviews
"Gr 10 Up. Five controversial court cases ranging from problems of breast implants to psychotic tendencies from prescribed depression medication are the focus of this series. Each video provides a visual detail of these different cases with actual court testimonies. At the beginning of each segment, consumers related to the case tell their story, with narrator intervention as necessary, so that viewers have a clear picture of the hardships, and in some cases, the devastation the plaintiffs have endured. The defendants side is also presented with representatives of the different companies present. Actual trial excerpts are introduced throughout the video so that viewers get a clear picture of both points of view from the plaintiffs, representatives of the companies, and legal or scientific experts. Facts are given about each case with unflinching clarity, and the ethics of large companies come into question. Former jurors, interviewed after the trials have been decided, lend another perspective to these cases. Note that “Silicon Implants on Trial” shows a frontal shot of the plaintiff’s deformed breasts, which may offend some viewers. These videos would be a welcome addition to debate, government, or business law classes because the cases involve current events that affect health and safety issues. – Mercedes Smith, Bishop Kenny High School, Jacksonville, FL – January 2002"

Summary When we purchase a product or use a service, we have the right to expect, at the very least, a safe commodity. Yet defective or harmful goods and services are common indeed. Most consumer court cases arise out of just such circumstances. Occasionally, lawsuits such as these result in cases that affect the public in a significant way. This may be due to the issues at hand, the large number of people involved or simply the huge amounts of money at stake.

LANDMARK CONSUMER RIGHTS TRIALS examines five of the unforgettable cases: (1) Tobacco on Trial, (2) Prozac on Trial, (3) Silicone Implants on Trial, (4) Automobile Safety on Trial, and (5) A Hospital on Trial.
