Summary Hershell West is host for this 30-minute interview of cartoneria (paper maché) artist Rubén Guzmán of Mexico. An artist himself, Mr. West is in an ideal position to inspire our guest to explain his creations. We immediately see that Mr. Guzmán’s art is firmly rooted in his cultural background. In this vein, he shows and explains pieces illustrating Aztec legends, and Mexican celebrations such as the Day of the Dead. We also hear tales of his moving to California, his creating two large dragon heads for Disneyland, and other delightful stories. We learn about his work in the community in a section illustrated by photographs provided by the guest. Finally, the show includes on-location footage of the Latino neighbourhood where he lives, and a visit to the artist’s studio in which Mr. Guzmán demonstrates how to create his cartoneria figures.
